i recently purchased a speedo and seller assures me that it was working when removed. is there a way to check the speed sensor/speedo ?

There is a way to check the speed sensor but when all is said and done the test is not always accurate and you have to build a tool. instructions are here somewhere. Do you have access to a known good one? That is what my dealer told me they do. It is much more accurate they say. Also 90% of speedo issues boil down to the hall sensor. I had an issue on my 01, just bought one and boom everything works again.
