The speedometer on my sportsman 500 does not work. I see three potential troublespots. The cable, the head or the pick up. What is the best way to isolate the problem and determine which part is bad.

Usually the cable will be bad. If you have a manual, there is a drawing of the test device and can be built for a few bucks.

I don't have a manual. Where could I order one?
The cable sounds like the least expensive part of the assembly. I was trying to avoid troubleshooting by the process of elimination.

unscrew the cable from the trans put a drill on the end of the cable and spin it to see how fast your drill will go. If it don't run about 30-40 mph unscrew speedometer end of cable and see if cable is broken or pulled out of speedometer socket. If no prob with cable, find a hex socket that will fit and spin speedo with drill to see if speedo broken. If all working check drive mechanism on trans.
I had a guy flip one and stretched cable housing enough that cable was pulled out of speedo socket just enough to not drive it.

Good luck
