I have an 01 Sportsman 500. Noticed recently in the cold weather that I am unable to shift the quad after it sits outside for extended periods. If I let it run for a few minutes or keep in inside heated garage I have no problem but issue returns once it sits and is cold. Is there a place that water could get in shift box? If so how do I get rid of it? Would a tranny fluid change fix it? I have not had the machine in any deep water or nor has it been wrecked/rolled so I am puzzled what is going on. Appreciate any help.

Water in the transmission is not uncommon. Should be changing the tranny fluid once a year anyhow. Change it and see what it looks like.

Also check inside shifter lever..if water gets in there it freezes....remove the boot an check it....while its removed may as well clean an add new oil to it....use what you use in engine...also check boot for any rips....And do what Boburk said...warm the machine up an check oil in tranny....if oil on dip stick looks milky it has water....but check shifter first....take off boot an look......
