A buddy of mine wanted me to fix up his 02 sportsman 700. I’ve owned and worked on a couple Polaris’s so i thought i’d give this one a try. Been sitting for a couple years. Tore it down to clean gas tank, fuel lines, carb, etc. and in the process shot some starting fluid in the intake to see if it would fire. Nothing. Took plugs out and tested if they have spark. Nothing. I got a test light and started searching for power and i when i turn the engine over i get power from the wire coming out of the stator where it connects into the cdi box, but no power out of the cdi. I’m guessing it’s the cdi?? I pulled the flywheel cover off and there’s no sign of rust or corrosion. Let me know what you guys think, any help is appreciated. Want to figure out what it is so i don’t have to spend tons of money on unnecessary parts.

Has the ignition been upgraded from the old Ducati system to the upgraded Kokusan ?
The old Ducatis were prone to failure , do a search here or google , you will get more info on it .

It has the original Ducati ignition system. But my friend isn’t wanting to dump a ton of money into this old four wheeler ($800 for whole new ignition system). If i could narrow it down to only one part i’d have to buy that would be ideal

CDI / primary coil control module part number 4010696 is $350 and on back order - will most likely be discontinued and the Kokusan replacement kit may be the only option to get spark, but before giving up keep in mind; 90% of all electrical problems are connection related and 90% of all connection problems are ground related.

RM Stator has a Coil CDI kit that may solve your problems. I just put it on my 03 700 twin. Didn’t fix my problem but I bought it as a no spark project. Its supposed to be a Ducati upgrade. I’ll let you know how it works out for me. I have a discount code if you want to go the RM Stator route.
