either you have a briken gear in your shift box thing that mounts onto your transmision or you have a broken gear right in your transmision. you just have to tear into it.
my sportsman 500 was doing the same thing adjusted the shift linkage and it helped but i still had to rev engine a little while shifting however now back to not shifting not sure if its wore gear selector and linkage or if its in the tranny
