Not sure about Polaris, but, my Son had a Kawasaki Bayou 220 that he was not willing to put a battery in. It would barely turn over then refuse to move. He could successfully make it start and run with the recoil starter, until the battery died altogether. Hope that helps.
That is not good. If you are unable to turn over the motor by pulling you have another much more serious issue. Do this. Pull out the spark plug and see if you can pull over the motor. If it is really hard then put some oil in the plug hole and let it sit. Try again. If that is of no help then pull off the recoil starter and see what is going on in there.
Makes me want to take all (4) of my recoil starters off and make sure everything is up to snuff! Also, makes me want to put silicone sealer on the recoil starter handle cup where it meets the case until I need to yank on it!!!
