2000 500 sportsman pulled starter rope came out and and will not go in do i need to pull this apart and if so will i need to remove the running boards and recoil unit, looks like some rust in side.
Yep, what ridinagain said. These recoils are known for corroding over time unless they are sealed. This supposedly played a part in Polaris removing them from the 500s. I still think it was to save a nominal amount of money, but that's just my opinion.
