Hi, I buyed my 850xp eps 2011 on friday. My atv is always sleeping outdoor. This afternoon I've tried to start my atv and I just heard a clicking sound when I turn the key. So I removed the front rack, I've checked the battery poles, it was a little loose, I've tighten the 2 bolts and shake the wire. After that, I've tried an other time, I heard a clic and it start. So what do you thing it could be...bad starter, bas selenoid?? thank!

bad battery, definitely. I would ask you purchasing dealer you are concerned about the condition of your battery and would like a load test done, and a possible replacement.

It could of also just been the fact the cables were loose. But sometimes if a dealer keeps a machine long enough, the batteries do sometimes need to be replaced depending on how long.

My budds 2011 850 xp just did the same thing for the 3rd time. Been to the dealer twice now and already had a new battery installed once. This Time (today) is was costly cuz we were 5 hours north riding, hotel, gas, and had to return. Dropped it off at the door of the dealer even with it being closed. :irked:It also lost power, almost sounds like something in the motor went. Seems like the XP doesn't like the cold weather?

The brother of my friend got that problem too. A week before I buy my 850, he told me to not buy this atv...It seem that problem is common, Maybe it will have a recall for bad starter?! Maybe the problem is the starter itself, or maybe the tranny fluid is too thick when its really cold...or bad relay??! who knows..

850xp starter

WOW, someone else with starter issues. I have installed 4-starters on my 2009 850xp. first starter went bad after only 200 miles and left me stranded 12 miles from my truck.

Polaris repaired the issue under warranty. the second starter went out after a year and of course after the warranty had expired.

I purchased the third started for 259.00. This starter lasted about 4-months and it to died. The vendor covered this starter and replaced it.

Now 6-months later the fourth starter has again died. I am at a lose trying to figure why all the starter problems.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

2010 850 exp,eps starter issue

I have had this machine since April 2010. warranty up in Oct. 2010.
Had a starter issue begin Feb. 2011. Thought the way it was acting, frozen water or moisture in starter. it was zero outside that day. took to garage warmed up starter with wifes hairdryer. LOL wrapped with a plastic hammer and away it went. got home that night, wouldn't start again.
took starter off and left on boiler for 2 days, thinking it would dry it out, replaced on machine started up 3 times, then nothing. took to Polaris dealer to confirm for me starter was bad. yes it was bad. Polaris has superseded the part number to a different starter. new # 4012855-479.
This is short of Polaris admiting they have starter issues. I sent Polaris inc. a message and got the genic reply back , go see a dealer.
While I was able to find an original OEM part for 110. 00 chepaer, i'll recommend you put the superceded part on 1st. looks to be better sealed.
The dealer knew I was po'd and made me a deal on replacement and instalation.

I recently had the same problems with my '10 XP. Found that the grease used in the polaris starters was too thick and would not cause the solenoid to move all the way. Which would cause the "click" but no start. Mine only had a problem when it was cold out, as soon as it warmed up it would be fine.
I replaced the starter with an aftermarket one and have had no issues as of today. I was able to find a starter for $207. Much better than the $400 polaris wants.

My suggestion? Take the polaris one off and have it rebuilt with better synthetic grease and re-dip it.

Man, I just had this question ready to type up myself when I saw this post. But mine is not on a XP it's on a '01 Sportsman 500 HO. I worked just fine yesterday, then today, click click click. Never had anything act as if it were going out either. I checked the battery, threw it on the charger for about 30 minutes to be sure it wasn't that. It starts fine with the pull rope, but nothing with the electric. I really can not afford $400 for a new starter on this machine right now. I guess I either deal with pull starting (which can be a pain in the @$$ at best of times) or empty out the gas and put the quad away for a very long time. Any other suggestions I could try?

I got an aftermarket starter from a company that sells wholesale starters and alternators.

It's the exact same starter, o-rings, dipped in rubber, Hitachi brand.

They had one on the shelf and it was half the price of a POS polaris starter that i had to wait 3 days for.

I just installed a new solenoid, starter and bendix on my 03 Sportsman 500HO and the cost for all three delivered to my door was around $85 from DB Electrical. Check them out.
I'm all over them like flies on stink! Thank you very much!!

That was 12 years ago - I doubt the help will be thanked.
