“The deal is, there is a typo.”
When you wire up a Superwinch Terra 3500 winch there are two switches to wire. The handlebar switch and the remote control. Actually, you wire the receptacle for the remote.

Each switch has a red wire that is connected to a “key controlled positive wire” on the ATV. One of two orange/white wires near the battery on most Sportsmen.

Each switch also has a green and black wire that are connected to either a left or right spade connector on the solenoid supplied with the winch. These green and black wires are addressed in three places in the Terra 3500 Installation guide.
Page 5 illustration of the solenoid. Shows green wires connected to the LEFT spade connector and black wires to the RIGHT spade connector.
Page 7 text instructions steps 5 and 6 instruct the installer to connect the green wires to the RIGHT spade connector and the black wires to the LEFT spade connector.
Page 8 wiring schematic agrees with the instructions on page 7 steps 5 and 6 showing the green wires connected to the RIGHT spade connector and the black wires connected to the LEFT spade connector.

If they are wired correctly the winch drum will spool out when you press the “out” side of the rocker switch on the handlebar or remote. AND, of course, the drum will spool in when you press the “in” side of either rocker switch. If you wire them backwards, the winch will spool backwards to the labels on the two switches.

So I wrote to Superwinch to ask which spade terminal the green and black wires SHOULD be wired to for proper operation. Here is their verbatim reply.

David,
The deal is, there is a typo. It tells you both options. You can wire the winch both ways What it will do is the winch will run backwards on the switch. So If the winch runs out when you push the in button then you will need to reverse the green and black.
