96 sportsman 400 4x4

I took it out on its first trip over the weekend with its new owner. I thought I'd run into a few problems more than likely considering the only riding it had been in during the last 10 years was around a field....and the last 2 years of that it hasnt been rode anywhere.

It ran great, lot better than I expected. Only problem I had, was the chain came off about 4 hours into the trip. We put it back on, only for it to come off again about 100 yards down the road, then again, then again. We noticed after the 2nd or 3rd time, that the chain had gotten a ton of slack in it, slack that wasnt there when we started.

So, again keep in mind i'm real new to this stuff. I'm as noob as a noob can be. How exactly do I go about tightening the chain up. Is there a tensioner somewhere, or something else I need to look for. And, is it common, that once the chain comes off the first time, will it have all that slack and continue to come off until tightenin it back up. Thanks again.

most atv chains can be tighined if you rotate the back axel. the axel sits in a bearing carrier. and is offset in the carrier. and is held by 2 bolts. so if you rotate it it will either tighen it, or losen it. if it lookes to be an old chain or the orginal it may be time for a new chain. my 1cent worth

your 1 cent seems to be exactly right. I'm not sure if its that original chain or not, but we did notice when taking it off, the master link was missing the retaining clip.....:surprised: not real sure how long it had been gone or how the chain had held together without it. I'm gonna put a new link in with the clip, tighten the chain up and see what happens. Probably get a new chain to keep on hand in case.

i agree. that could have been interesting. iv hade the chain fall of on one of my od wheelers when i was yonger. that sucked. no tools. a few miles from help. iv never had part of the master link go missing. that could have been worse.

the master link was on there , the retaining clip probably just wore down due to mud n dirt ........i would suggest replacing the chain and sprockets all at the same time .

i say if the sprokets teeth look like a saw blade. or look like a hook. id replace them. pretty much your call tho. if youd want to replace the chain and sprockets.

Went down to get the chain back on and I beleive we figured out what happened. There is to bolts that on the back of the rearend that look like they are used for the trailer ball bracket. We were also told they were the bolts to loosen up in order to tighten or loosen the chain. When we went to loosen the bolts, they "might" have been finger tight....if that. So, if I'm correct, with those bolts not being very tight, wouldnt that allow that part of the rearend to turn if I hit a hard enough bump.

I figured thats how there was no slack in the chain when we started saturday, then all of a sudden, its falling off every 50 feet.

There was a couple of other bolts not very tight on it after checking. I dont know if its where it was never ridden hard at all over the years, and the trail we took just jarred them loose or if someone was plotting against the previous owner:fragez::fragez:

anything is possable. but i can see it happining. id say if it was tight when driving and lose after when the bolts are lose. then id say yes. tigen the chain but not to tight. then check it while driving.

yes , if they were loose that can cause your axle to rotate n chain get loose ...suggestion , order yourself an owners manual so you will know n see the chain tightening procedure .
