ok look i know its a small machine however it came at the right price ($250 running with rear bearings out) now I rode it for the past year and it has been reliable for the most part but also a pooch...I'm 350 lbs... beings as this is an air cooled motor how much can be done before it starts over heating all the time??? I dont really like modifying machines to much when they're a 2 stroke because I don't wanna put a piston in every weekend...been there before... would leaving the motor alone and clutching be the way to go??? By the way it burned down for the first time last weekend halfway through a 100 mile ride came home on a tow strap so it is a clean slate.:chairfall:

You're fine. Not worries. A 250 2stroke has similar power output as a 500 4stroke since you have ignition every stroke, instead of every other stroke. As long as you're riding...you shouldn't have an overheating problem with it being air cooled.

You can clutch it to get whatever kind of power band you're looking for out of, for the most part. Just remember that a 2stroke has less of an "in-between" then a 4stroke. They tend to be happy at a closed throttle, or wide open throttle. There is less of a "middle" power band.

And no matter what you do, you're going to have to rebuild a 2stroke more often then a 4stroke. But, since it doesn't have a valve train in the head, its a fairly simple motor to rebuild, and so it cost much less to do so.

There is no comparison between even my modified 250 2006 trailblazer (pipe, exhaust, sprocket kit) and my sportsman 500. Especially when you start climbing. FYI we premix the oil on the trail blazer too, and the bike was like new when I got it, so the engine is in good shape.

The 4-stroke has a lot more torque.

That being said, 350lbs is a lot of weight; I'm not sure that the suspension can handle that.

Clutch spring would work great to get you there. I also recommend a 11/42 sprocket kit with RK EXW-Ring chain. (stock gearing is 11/36).

They also make some stiffer front springs I would recommend for you. I put some on a trail boss 325 and they work great. Much better handling.

Look at my signature to see all I have done to my two stroke 300 xplorer. I am waiting on some heavier weights for the clutch to get it to hook up quicker. Springs don't cut it. And it's as reliable as hell. I run with guys that ride 700's to 800's and hold my own on the trails. Not on top end though, don't expect it to. I weigh 250 +/-.
