Hello there. I have a 2008 Sportsman 500 HO EFI.

A little backstory. I bought a aftermarket voltmeter on Amazon from AutoPowerPlus.

How I mounted it was in the empty spot, where the choke goes on carb models. Fits fine. I ended up using the accessory wires as I don't use them or that socket.

It worked right away, no issues. Now yesterday (10/12), I get nothing out of the display. I have power going to it via a multimeter test, so I'm assuming it got fried. Now I contacted them and they are sending out a replacement which is awesome.

Question time.
  1. Is the standard 20A fuse fine or the correct amps for it?
  2. Should I drop it down lower? 15, 10, 7.5 etc etc?
  3. What other precautions should I take to protect it and my electrical system?
Thank You :)

The accy wire (orange or orange w/white stripe) is fused at 20A. I wouldn't additionally fuse it. If the volt meter is going to fry it's going to fry and I don't feel a fuse is going to protect it.

That's what I was thinking as well. I mean if I drop the fuse to a lower rating like 7.5A, it might be possible if there's a surge in power it'll pop the fuse first. But then again, that voltmeter isn't really sending power through the lines, just receiving it, so leaving a 20A in the spot to me, would be the same thing.

I'm just going to chalk it up to having a defective item. If this next one fries, then I might need to spend more than a few bucks for a decent meter.

Yeah my thoughts are it was a defective meter and if it was to happen again a better meter is the way to go.

So it happened again on the replacement they sent.

Off to find a better one.
