I know this has been asked many times, but for my 2001 sportsman 400, should i use 0w-40, amsoil 0w-50 mobil 1 or 5w-50 castrol i usually only use my atv in the winter, what would be the best oil for me

With that said..... "usually only use my atv in the winter". It's recommended that a "good" quality synthetic in the 0W40 or 0W50 range is used. Note: The "0" in 0W40, is basically the cold weather pourability or how "fluid" it is at cold temps. And a "0" is rated for -40°F ambient air temperature. And the "40" in 0W40 is the warm weather ambient rated for up to 100°F. As for the flavor / brand.... pick your favorite brand, pour it in and use it. Some of the most popular alternatives by members of this site are: Pure Polaris (for those that follow the owners manual like it's the Bible), and most others use.... Mobil1 0W40, Amsoil 0W40, Castrol 0W40, Shell Rotella T6.... and so on!

Also in Canada and the Northern States... a 0W40 would be suitable year-round oil.

Good advice from Matthew there, I'll toss up another vote for the Mobil1 0W40 "European Car Formula".

I also use a Purolator L14612 oil filter. About 1/3 of the cost of the Polaris filter here. Exact same dimensions, same number of inlet/outlet holes. Yes, I actually bought the $12 Polaris filter, took it to Wal-Mart and spent close to an hour comparing filters until I found the right one. Then I took the Polaris one back to the dealership for a refund. Yeah, I'm that cheap.

Yeah, don't be like me and get hosed for the Polaris oil and filter. There are Better choices out there that can be had for much less $$$$

Like I said in another thread... There's a helluva lot more engines running Mobil1 than there are running Polaris oil... Guess which one I trust?

Nice write up Matthew! However, the second number is the viscosity rating at operating temperature or 100 degrees Celsius or 212 deg F. :veryhappy:

BTW I recommend any 0W40 synthetic but I prefer Dos Equis or Mobil 1

Kevin, make sure you don't get the filler holes mixed up for those two, or you might have a very bad ticking engine, but you'll have great bowel movements...lol

Ken, why a 30 weight rather than a 40 in the warmer climate? Just curious....

Whats the typical oil usage on a 850 HO engin? I have a 2013 sportsman, had to put in a quarter quart in around 30 hours, or 300 miles. I run on fairly challanging terain around 70% of the time.

I just bought a case of 5W 50 MB-1, cost was around 9 dollars a quart. I was talking to the counter person in the dealership, and he said that some people not using polaris 5W-50 were getting worn exhaust valve cams. I took that statement with a grain of salt as they say.

How do you know this? Temp gauge or what

I run Amsoil 0w40...and an ea filter...as well ass amsoil everywhere else. I also added ams coolant boost and have better cooling with it.

You beat me to it Vandal. I have yet to see any snake oils work for cooling and I have temp gauges on both of mine and I think I have tried everything. Maybe I will get some of the Avon coolant boost and try it.

Ronnie
Sorry Ronnie...I couldn't help myself...lol

Ovrkil.....no one is flaming you, but we hear claims like this all the time, and if there is no data to back it up, they are worthless. So my next question to you is, before you added the coolant boost....did you time the fans run times....because if not, your statement is just subjective, and made without merit, and will end up as just another claim without data. I hope you're right. We'd all like to actually lower our run temps

#32 ·
Yes we were, but you changed the subject in one of your posts....so its part of the thread now. So do you have any data backing up your claim or not?

It seems like you're trying flame ovrkil. He posted it very causally that it seemed to work. He didn't swear by it and say he's right over anybody or something. Nobody's going to post much like on some other forums if your instantly demanding he back up what he said so loosely. I go to the drag strip a lot where I live. They all use a similar product called "water wetter" by Red Line. A lot of people use it to help keep their engines cool. They all swear by it and I recommend checking it out.

No one's trying to flame anyone. I asked where and how he got his info...and that's all. I would expect the same thing to happen to me if I made an unfounded claim about something. As I also said I hope that he was right, but before I or any other member go out and buy something that has been suggested on the forum, the one suggesting the product should be able to show real world facts. If that's flaming....so be it

Well Vandul, I did not time this or that. I could bs and say I did...but for what? I didnt put "snake oil" in my cooling system or put holy water in. I put coolant boost in. I noticed a difference in my bike, being that ive owned it for a few years now I know how it is. That being said..maybe you should have a look around on the internet a lil wee bit and see how many people have proven it works. I've also said the sky is blue, but without matching it up to a swatch....I cant be sure...

No...I'm not going on the internet for some manufacturer to tell me how good their stuff is, and I'm sure not going to use what you are recommending....not without something better than Well gee, it worked for me...I'm pretty sure or I think

Not to be way off topic here but im gonna share a personal experience here. Radiator cooler additives do work! When coolant flows it builds conductivity, which in turn causes less heat transfer. I had a mudtruck, 600hp 468bbc that was hardblocked for strength(no coolant in block), i ran a 4 core aluminum radiator and high flow water pump and could only run the truck for about 30 minutes before i was at 260°F. Now when i started using one of the not mentioned additives, i could run atleast 15 - 20 minutes longer before my water and oil temps were in the hot zones. It seemed to drop my overall temp 20°. Made me a believer, run a bottle in every vehicle i own.

Ok....I've got a question, if you had no coolant in the block, What did you need a radiator or water pump for, because if that coolant doesn't go in the engine, I'd really like to know where it went, and how it even got hot. Never heard of anything like this before. Heard of running no radiator and no coolant in drag cars but this seems rather bizarre to me. I'd really like to know what kind of cooling system is needed for an engine that has no coolant in the block
