What size winch?

Hi guys, just joined this forum. I just bought a 2014 570 about 2 weeks ago and I've been lurking on here trying to nail down what winch and plow I want to get. I've seen a lot of varying opinion on these products and have been trying to research and compare on my own as well. Like most, price is of some concern but I don't want to save a buck and then wish I hadn't later. Having that said, I'm currently leaning toward a Viper Elite winch and Denali plow combo. From what I've seen I believe I'd prefer the Glacier Pro plow but I'm not sure that the easier mounting is worth almost double. The biggest question I still have is what size winch. I've gathered that anything 2500 or larger is fine for the plow but thinking about work and trail use makes a good argument for "bigger is better". It was mentioned to me yesterday that along with "bigger" comes more load on the electrical system which could be an issue when plowing a small driveway where you're running the plow up and down often. I had been thinking about the Viper Elite 4000 but per my last sentence I'm wondering if maybe the 3500 (smaller motor) would make more sense. I can always carry slack blocks if extreme torque where needed. Any input to make this even more, or preferably less, confusing would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a 2500 Champion. I know it's not the greatest brand, but this thing hasn't failed me. Got me out of some rough spots. I'd go bigger then what you think you'll need, no matter the circumstance, as you never want to have less then you need. I'd likely go for a 3500, at least that's what I'll be upgrading to one day.

As for plowing, get a short cable/rope for the winch, and use a battery maintainer after a day of pushing snow.

A 2500 lb winch is plenty for an atv, especially if you carry a snatch block with you. I have never needed anything bigger, and I've never had to use my snatch block to increase my line pull. Spend the money on a higher quality winch, not higher pulling capacity.

When you get into the #4000 range you have to watch the physical size of the winch. It may not fit your particular mount. Plus, do you really want more weight than necessary hanging on the front. I would get a #2500-#3500 winch.

2500 is enough for a full size ATV. 3500 if you really work the winch ( I'm a fan of never working at full capacity) regularly. beyond that is just overkill. The weight won't kill you as low forward weight is very helpful in hill climb situations. But it could make stopping on a decent interesting.

2500-3500 is tons (literally haha)

I have a 3000lb and I rarely use it, only for plowing basically. When it finally burns out, I plan on going with a Viper 3500.

Use mine for work as well as play. From experience 2500 is not enough depending on how and where you ride. Many times my 2500 on the old sporty lacked nutz to release me from the suction of mud multiple times...so i bought a snatch block to double it...pros and cons with that. Many times the 2500 could not rescue buddies or others we happened upon so i either hooked in tandem with another quad and winch or got out of the way for somebody with a 3-3500 winch....used the snatch block a few times. Downfall as you know with snatch blocks you need twice as much line, and 2500lb winch already come with alot less line than bigger u its...which can put you in a pickle depending on surroundings if you are too far from a solid anchor point.

Went with a 3500lb on current machine and thus far its gotten me out of everything i was stuck in, buddy was stuck in, then friend with same winch used his to pull him and myself out when we were frame stuck in a creek bed and didnt miss a beat daisey chained two quads together.

3000-3500lb gets my vote, 3500 more so. Its helped fall some decent trees, moved alot of downed trees to clear a plot we're turning into camp ground, drug trees up river banks that we fell on the angeled bank and topped into river and backwater lake.

Thanks for all the replies. As of right now I'm going to ponder over the 3 day weekend and will probably pull the trigger on Monday. I'm leaning toward the Viper Elite 3000 winch with the 60" Denali plow along with the appropriate mountings. I'd really like the quick and easy on/off of the Glacier plow but with the Moto Alliance summer special, I can get the entire outfit for less than the cost of just the Glacier.

Just be sure to do some research and google whatever your looking at with tags words
Bent, broke, review...but most reviews when you track websites will later turn i to bent, broke threads later.

So dont base buying descion on cheap...because you will get exactly what you want...cheap, and nothing better than a snow removal device that is down during a snow storm.

I'd say for an atv I'd go with a 3500. Maybe a 3000. The KFI Mount and Plow for my Ranger are the best I've had experience with...outside of the BOSS setups but there your talking thousands of dollars. I had the Glacier Pro plow setup on my 500 sportsman and I really liked it but the KFI is built better. Like IHI said, DONT CHEAP OUT or you'll just be paying more down the road.

I have the Denali 50" plow with the Viper Elite 3K and have had 0 problems.
Plows great, I think it is built just fine.
I picked mine up from Rvs Performance, all of my questions were answered by Ryan, you can call or email him.
I went with the KFI mount, it's one piece.
