So i have a '13 sportsman 500 and took the hubs off the other day to clean grass from behind them. I noticed my front left hub was sheared off at the part that slides into the bearing. I put it back together and went for a ride anyways while I waited for new bearings and hub to get here since I figured it had prob been like that for several rides anyways. Went today to take both struts off to get new bearings pressed in and noticed the other side did the same thing during the ride I just took!! I ride flat easy trails with moderate mud, 28 inch tires but always ride in low and have a qsc clutch kit. The bearings were about due for replacement but didn't make any noise or have THAT much play in them. What would cause the hubs to shear like that? I know there were torqued down properly too.

Haven't seen it on atv's but the 800 RZR's had the same problem a few years ago. Polaris made mid-year changes to beef up the hubs. They changed to wheel bearings with a larger diameter inside so that the hub could be made thicker on the end you found broken.
I suspect its caused by having the fronts in the air spinning in AWD and then hitting the ground and getting instant traction. Or similarly spinning in mud and then grabbing traction. You said you don't do those things but have you ever hit the AWD button when the rear wheels were already spinning? That would often crack the roller cage on older models. It may be that the hubs are now the weak link on the newer ones??
Of course, it could be that you just got some weak hubs when it was assembled. You might see if Polaris did any upgrades like they did the RZR.

think about,your aggressive tires are spinning with 20 miles in the mud and all of the sudden they grab a rock.
you can hit your hub with a sledgehammer and you have the same result.

Yeah I guess all that would make sense. I just wouldn't think my riding is aggressive enough to do that. The first one was prob that way when i bought the machine (at least I assumed) but after my ride this weekend I can't believe the other side broke too. I guess it's better than breaking an axle since these are cheaper and a lot easier to replace but still kind of disappointing. O well at least it's not just me, thanks for the replies.

I thought that the front differential pinion (cover) was designed to fail first as a safety measure! :banghead: :trink26: :lol:

Or maybe that's just on the big bores. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Ah Ha...They were probably both already broken when you bought the machine. You never know they are broken till you take it apart. That's when we found my buddy's RZR hubs broken when we were doing brakes and wheel bearings.
