Did you hot wire the old fan to see if it's still good? Of just hand spin it?

 

I hot wired the old fan, after I cut the wires and removed it. I’ve got the new fan installed and tested it by hot wiring it too but would like it to come on automatically like it supposed too. My 12 year old rides this machine usually and don’t want to have to worry about him hitting a switch for the cooling fan.

 

Whether 2x4 or 4x4 the fan is wired the same and so somple

The red/wht wire is hot - it goes to the fan switch in the radiator the wire goes from the switch to the fan and the brown wire goes to ground.

Unplug the fan switch and jumper the two wire together - with the key switch on the fan should run - if not check for power on on one of the red/wht wires on the switch plug - if no voltage, check the circuit breaker - if voltage, check the ground connection.

 

I think the only way to actually check the fan switch that's located in the top of the radiator is to remove it and put it in a pan of water and heat it up while checking continuity.

 

True, but whether it works comes after checking the wiring to assure power and ground.

Note: when testing the switch in a pan of water, suspend the switch, it can be damaged if laying on the bottom of the pan as the pan is heated.

 

One other think you have to watch for on those older polaris machines that have the fan switch in the TOP of the radiator is to to make sure the coolant is always topped up completely in the radiator with no air space. It will not cycle the fan on if its not submerged in liquid.

Coolant is to the tip top of the radiator. I fixed it, not how I really wanted but it’s fixed. I’ll have to make sure he flips it on from time to time but he doesn’t get too far away from me anyway.

 

If you're not gonna actually "fix" it so it works as designed, then simply turn the switch on and leave it there or just wire it to "key on" power so the fan comes on as soon as the key is turned.

 

I was worried about burning the fan up if it ran too much?

 

I think you should do a little more research and spend the time to fix it right, or let the fan run all the time.

I'd be more worried about burning up an engine than a fan.

I'm sure with the help from guys on here, you can get it figured out!

 

If you take the fan switch out of the radiator and go to most any auto parts store you can match it up for about $12 or $15. It simply needs to close the the circuit around about 195* to turn the fan on.
