XP incremental improvements

Like with any new product, Polaris has made incremental improvements to the design of the XP models after the initial launch. I thought it would be handy to list these changes along with the model year that they took effect.

For me, this would be helpful because I'm considering selling my '09 550XP and finding a newer model (not necessarily brand new). So as I begin the search if there are certain feature improvements that I'm interested in then I'd know which model years will have them.

For instance:

High idle on the 550 - I understand that this was changed at some point, does anyone know which year?

Let's see what we can come up with!

2012 is when the idle went down.

Sean - Thanks for the info.

How about the harsh clutch engagement? I understand that has been changed as well. Anybody know which model year this occurred?

Any ideas on this? I recall talking to my dealer about this and he was able to look at the parts lists and noticed that the spring and clutch weights changed on the 550 after a certain year. I guess I could call him back up and ask.

As a side note, has anyone that is familiar with the harsh takeoff on the earlier models tried a newer one? Is the difference that noticeable?

a few that I'm aware of are rear stabilizer bar changed from 09 to 2010 to allow for larger tires with no rubbing. Larger gas tank starting in 2011 resulting in relocating the power steering motor as well for eps units.. XP Touring in 2010 requires unbolting the passenger hand grips. In 2011, the grips became lock n' ride. (the 2011 grips work on the 2010 touring as well) Redesigned rear upper a-arms starting in 2011 with 2 less grease zerks than 09 & 10) - I believe they also used a different material in the motor mounts starting in 2011 as well to provide even more vibration dampening. 1st analogue and digital combo gage starting in 2011.. 09 & 10 were all straight up digital gages. 2012 power was increased from 70 to 77 a change to the airbox and larger diameter throttle bodies.. I think "boardwalk blue" which was only available on the touring from 2010 to 2011 was discontinued in favor of "blue fire" in 2012 which is avail on various models.. Besides other colour changes year over year, that's all I'm aware of..

I have a '12 550 XP and the take off is smooth as silk on mine. That's o e of the things I love about a Polaris, the power delivery is usually so smooth it doesn't feel as strong as it is. I had a Yamaha grizzly 660 and that thing had power surges, made riding kind of squirrely at times!

The seats were changed a few times too. Same shape but different firmness. My 12 touring came with a seat like a brick. I swapped it out for an 11 and it was nice and plush. As of 2012 there were three different part numbers for seats on the touring. The 09 was one number, the 10-11 were the same, and the 12 was a third.

2011+ changed clutching
.
Was this for the 550 and was it to help with the harsh engagement or something else?

I bring this up because if I do move into a newer XP I'd want to make sure this issue has been resolved.

Looking back at the list of all the things I've fixed on my '09, it looks like I forgot about the suspension bushings. Did they ever go to a more durable material?

my 2011s never had to be replaced tell 2000 miles, also with the clutching it is supposed to be smother but its still kinda clunky
