Hi everyone. The other day I went and bought a 2009 Polaris Sportsman 500 carb model. (2,000 miles) I bought it because the owner said it needed a transmission. I took the transmission out and Cracked the Case.
Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong inside the transmission?
When I tried to drive the quad around the yard only one rear wheel was spinning. When it took the rear axles out i noticed that 1 Axel was completely stripped so that was the issue with one wheel spinning.
But then when I try and shift it it feels strange not like it should shift.
Another thing I noticed was that someone was already digging around inside the transmission before me.
My issue is should I buy and you transmission or is this one okay?

Your pics do not disclose any obvious issues. Other than the condition of the teeth of the gears. Any shifting issues would be deeper. The engagement dogs, shift forks, and the gears the engagement dogs mate to need to be inspected. That requires a trained eye and a more detailed disassembly.

it was not bad to remove. no special tools were needed to remove the tranny. maybe took me 5 or 6 hours or so using an impact. just a bunch of bolts, 2 rear axles, transmission brakets, and secondary clutch. some parts took a while to take off since they had rust and mud..
