Hello Everyone,

I just picked up a 1997 Sportsman 500 4X4 last week for my son and I. The transmission was grinding in reverse and now reverse is gone. I found many transmissions on ebay but I need to know what years will fit into my 1997.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Blueline,

I really appreciate the help. Thank you!

Atvjunkie,

I adjusted the linkage per the shop manual and I am still having the same issue. Also the trans leaks from every possible seal so I would have to remove it to replace all the seals. For the price I can get a used one its worth just swapping out and not having any downtime while I R&R the original trans.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 1997 is the only year that used that exact gearcase. i know thats going to make your hunting a little difficult, but i triple checked and 1996 and 1998 sportsmans all have different gearcases. it seems each year they did something different to it.

if i can cross check any other part #'s for you between years, just let me know. sorry

Yes part numbers are different, transmissions are the same. A 96,97,98,99 trans will fit the 97. For example a 95 magnum trans a a 94 400l trans will have different part numbers . Are they the same? will they interchange? The answer is yes!
I'm not looking at numbers but the real parts. There are several makes and models that will interchange 96-99. Looks like 99 will be your last year due to the speedometer drive. Ex: Sportsman 335, Explorer 500, Sportsman 500. These transmissions are plentiful on ebay.

I have 1996/2001 sportsman someone took two machines made one the body the engine is off a 2001 but the trans and frame are 1996 my wiring harness is a 2001 I think . But here’s my question my trans has a chain tensioner that is broken and I can’t find it anywhere it says it’s a discontinued part but I found a 2003 trans that has the updated parts besides the speedometer what would be different. Also does anybody know were I can get the tensioner for that transmission
