New to the forum and hate to just jump in on a thread like this but I am looking for wiring diagram for a 2008 500 HO. I don’t have the original owners manual on the second owner

If you've heard the fuel pump run in the past, then you should still hear it - I don't work on Rangers, so my knowledge on them is limited, but the one you have has the same engine as the Sportsman ATV. Can't explain the ratcheting sound unless it's the key switch making poor contact and what you hear is the fuel pump kicking on and off. Next time it won't start, try spraying starting fluid into the intake while cranking the engine - if it starts, but if dies when you take the fuel away, then it is a fuel problem - if it starts and continues to run and will restart after shut off, then it may be valves.

Thanks for the help. I started trouble shooting problem checking to see if pump actually moved gas and if I had voltage to pump. Pump did not pump gas and I had voltage to one side of pump connector. I pretty much convinced myself the pump was bad but than noticed the male end of the electrical connector looked dirty inside. Tried cleaning and sliding connector in and out till I saw contacts shinny inside. Sure enough I worked, the pump came to life and the Ranger started. Tried it again today, I hear the pump cycle and it starts.

Congratulations

I've mentioned it in many posts on several different forums; 90% of all electrical problems are connections and 90% of connection problems are bad grounds. Looks like you encountered one of the 10% of the first 90%

Sorry to say my fix wasn't a fix.. It's definitely a fuel pump problem but a intermittent one. For example it was running great. Parked it over night and it would not start next day. Turn key and you do not hear pump run. Pulled the seat off to inspect, turned the key and pump ran and it started. In your experience, does a bad fuel pump act this way?

I have problems with atv, 4wd and light switch, can someone be kind send me a wiring diagram for a 2012 sportsman forest 500 carb mode. I think the problem might be in handlebar switches. Winter just arrived to Finland and i need my snowplower.

When my battery is low on my 08 Ranger 500 EFI it will turn over what sounds to be fine but won't start. It will start on starting fluid but won't stay running. Charging the battery sufficiently gets it running every time. I credit this to insufficient voltage to run the ecm and fire the injectors but enough for the starter to turn the engine over. I have some troubleshooting to do with my charging system but hopefully this info may help someone.
