Hey guys,

Great site. I have been riding a Troy Lee Predator for 4 years, and now am a proud new owner of a 2009 Stealth Black 850 XP. I took it out for my first real ride this past weekend, and really enjoyed it. I did notice a few things though. It sounds like the top end of the motor makes a slight ticking noise when "unloaded" or freewheeling, and the rear end makes noise when first engaging a gear (from park to high, etc...).

I have been searching on this forum, and have found lots of useful info. I just put in a call to my dealer, and he is going to get back to me on the available recalls for my machine. But what else is there to keep an eye on?

Here is what I have learned from this site so far:

1. Front ball joints (mine are looking good so far)
2. Rear axles popping (hopefully mine will be fixed under warranty)
3. Some people describe a slight top end noise, and some say they don't have that on their machine

I love the machine, and am very impressed with the power. I would just like to hear what the pro's on this site have to say on what to have the dealer look at and what to watch out for in the future?

Thanks for any and all input!!

hi.

first, if your dealer doesnt get back to you soon, i can run your VIN# for you and tell you if you have any of the XP recalls or not. just send me a PM with you vin and ill do it for you. i am a parts guy at a polaris dealership...

the ticking noise, do you thing you only hear it when its freewheeling because you cant hear it over the motor at a higher RPM, or because its not there?

and the rear end, does it only pop when shifting gears, or does it do it when your also riding it?

i'll let some of our XP guys give you some pointers first, with their experiences with the machines. if nobody really chimes in, ill try to do a write up myself when i have some more time about some things to watch for.

i think you picked the right forum. glad to have you here!:top:

Thanks for the replies guys. I am taking the XP into my dealer on Friday. He is going to do the recall work on the ball joints, even though they are fine at the moment. While I am there, I will talk to him about the engine noise.

Is there a suggested time line in which we should be checking valve lash? I figured this may be the noise I am hearing possibly.

Thank you

The noise you're hearing when first putting it in gear is likely coming from the secondary clutch. Mine makes it as well. It's a roller secondary and when you go from forward to reverse (or vice-versa) they will "clunk" from the reverse lock-out notch in the helix when the secondary moveable sheave starts to move. I also hear this all the time on my sled whenever I go from forward to reverse.

i've had bad luck with mine, tranny went at 22kms, and motor had noise ,ticking, knocking, ended up having an out of round cylinder bore, and also took out the bottom end bearings ,they are finially replacing the engine after a bit of a struggle , it only has 15 hrs on it,and it had the issues since day one
