Replacing stator

Good Morning,
Just looking for some past experience help in regards to replacing the stator on my 2008 sportsman 500 EFI. My atv was in the shop for a constant dead battery, the local atv shop diagnosed it to be a bad stator and would like $550 for the OEM stator as well as $300 (3 hours labor) to fix it. I am not worried about doing the job myself (except for not having a flywheel puller) but my question is how important is it to replace the stator with OEM rather than an aftermarker. I can get an OEM stator (part # 3089959) for $450, or can get an aftermarket from electrosport for $140. Your input would be greatly appreciated, if there are any other part companies that could be suggested please let me know.

Thanks,
jayps5

I replaced my stator also. I bought an after market one from Dennis Kirk. I used a steering wheel puller from Harbor Freight(about $15)and it worked great for the job.I also at the same time, bought a voltage regulator from Polaris because stator and regulator are related to each other. It's been 2yrs since and I've had no problems.

I used caltric and was very happy with the product also bought a regulator from them, good folks to deal with . Just make sure you check the two next to each other very closely I needed to modify my stator a bit right where the three wires come together the plastic molding was out by about 1/8" just enough to make it cant a bit off square. Other than that I would guess it's the same company making both very hard to tell and I'm charging at 14.2 steady no issues.
FYI my dealer wanted 624$ for oem!!!!

Thanks for the recommendation, I had read some reviews saying maybe the Caltric ones weren't as reliable. I am also probably suffering from the fear the service writer at the dealer put into me saying they installed an aftermarket one(dont know what brand) and it failed after about four rides around the dealership. Do you know if they offer a warranty?

Caltric stands behind their stuff I have NO issues with them they don't question they replace or refund
of course a dealer is going to say they are not as good as their stuff at 10 times the price!

I just ordered a used OEM stator that has been tested and is working. It was only $80 shipped. I figure at that price with me doing the work I don't mind taking a chance on a second hand OEM part. Hopefully it works out long term, but for the price I think Ill take my chances.

Hopefully they gave you a warranty. On this forum, people seem to have had a problem with the OEM stators( not all ). Although it's fairly easy to replace ( as long as you can pull the flywheel ), I opted to buy aftermarket and have had no problems in 4yrs.

I would agree 100% most aftermarket are the same as OEM most of the time better...dealers want their big bucks off your sweat and toil.

Thanks for the replies. I have actually decided to go with a new Electrosport Stator instead of the used OEM part and will install it myself. This will save me around 600 over the dealers option of having them do it with a new OEM part. While I am changing the stator I will also be replacing the Bendix too.
