Spooling your winch... How to?

Hey Guys,

I got myself 50' of synthetic rope today. What is the proper way to spool this onto the winch. I've heard many different ways to go about, but most commonly to lay the rope out downhill and attach it to a base, then slowly reel in the rope while attached to the base, with the first few layers not too tight. Does this sound right?

Thanks for any input. Videos of "How To" would be great!

You should remove old wire, clean and be sure the spool is free of any burs as syn isn't as abrasion resistant and burs will seriously limit the strength of the new cable. SAME fr the fairleed. Roller fairleeds are made for steel cable. Unless you have one specifically made for syn line. At the very least be sure the rollers are smooth and completely burr free. I prefer a hawse fairleed made of aluminium for ATV's and steel for my jeeps. When using syn line.

I like to have the machine down hill, in neutral. (I prefer to have the machine running too, for electrical reasons. Check the winch motor too. You do not want it to get too hot. If you cannot hold your hand on it, it is too hot! Heat KILLS the motors!!!) Attach the line to the spool as per manufacturer's instructions and the other end to an immovable object like a tree. Allow the weight of the machine to tension the line. You DO WANT IT TITE!! Other wise when you do use it for a heavy pull, the line on top will slide between layers and bind up the line.

Allow it to wrap nice and even. Each new wrap lying perfectly beside the last until all is on the spool.

Periodically CLEAN the line regularly if you use it in the mud. Ya see the mud drys and leaves small pieces inside the rope these are like sand paper and will, in time, destroy your new line.

Good luck,
