How to trouble shoot a no start issue

Okay so your quad does not start here is a logical step by step diagnosis to help determine what your problem may be. This guide is not meant to fix your issue just to help you determine what it is so you don’t throw away useless time and money. It is intended to help the person who has not had a lot of experience in fixing these issues. The seasoned mechanic knows these and the short cuts you can take while doing this stuff.
Something to consider: Occam’s razor says that the simplest solution is most likely the right one. If you hear hoof prints you should think Horses and not Zebra’s. :)

NO CRANKING:

You put the key on and it does not start:

1) Make sure the run switch is on

2) Make sure the quad is in Neutral

3) Make sure the battery is in good shape and fully charged

4) When you turn the key do you get a clicking from the solenoid

a. If you don’t hear a clicking then you have to make sure that you have power to the solenoid from the key switch. You can meter it from the thin wire on the solenoid. If you don’t then you have an issue in the switch.
b. If yes, then meter the contacts of the solenoid while turning over the key. You should have 12 volts on both sides. If you do not then clean both the terminals, reattach the wires and recheck. If you still don’t then replace the solenoid. Just because it clicks does not mean that it is working.
c. If you do, then you need to check voltage at the starter motor. Meter the wire lug on the starter and check to see if you have continuity from it to the solenoid lug that is not powered. If you do have continuity, then put a jumper cable directly to the battery positive terminal and touch it to the starter motor lug.

5) If it does not turn over then you need to pull the starter motor out and rebuild it. It will be one of three things: The brushes are broken or work out (most likely), the starter is rusty and filled with sludge and crap or that the magnets have become unwelded from the side of the starter case. The first two can be easily fixed with an inexpensive rebuild kit and a cleaning. The third makes the starter motor useless except for parts.

6) If it does turn over then your next step is make sure you have spark. Remove the plug and put it back in the spark plug boot and ground the tip on the motor and turn over and make sure you have a solid spark. If you don’t then you have an ignition problem. If you do have a spark then pour some gas down the spark plug hole and put back in the plug and see if it fires. If it does then you have a fuel issue.

7) If it wont start with the starter until the motor is warm then you likely have water in the starter that is either freezing and then thawing when motor warms up or until some of it is evaporating letting the brushes make contact with the armature or loosening up the bearings so that it spins easier. Either way it need to come apart.

Hopefully this will help some people figure out what direction to work toward.

Anyone with similar experience as this: I have a 2004 Sportsman - battery died so was changed (yes new fully charged, hooked up correctly), now I have NO POWER anywhere. No lights on display, no clicking of starter, nothing. Any suggestions besides load up & carry to dealership?

I have a 2013 500 ho...I took the battery off last fall when I stored it for the winter. I put it back in today and turned the key....nothing!! Battery is fully charged....I'm hoping it's just dirty connection. Is there a fuse somewhere I can check?

My 2001 has a start/kill switch on the left handlebar. To start I push up on the switch. It's to the side to kill. I never use it to kill the motor, just turn the key off. I have accidently bumped the switch to the kill position so of course it won't start. Drove me nuts until I checked the switch.

I have a 2004 sporstman 700 efi. my book says that it has a circuit breaker instead of fuses. It does say where they are or what it looks like. Can anyone tell me how to reset the circuit breaker if its been tripped? My battery was dead so I tried charging it, it arked on one of the terminals and nnow everything is dead. Thanks Brian

Got it running still have a question??

Ok so I don't have a meter so i tried jumping across the solenoid and it started right up. Every since then it has been starting with the switch. What could have been the problem? What sould I check? Thanks

Hello, love the forum but have only been a reader till now as I can't figure out my issue. I have read inrbigness thread on the won't start checklist but don't have a volt meter and am still stuck. A while ago bike wouldn't start with key so pulled it. Rope stayed extended. Tapped the starter and it started. Water had gotten into recoil so pulled it off and redid recoil. Put that back on and would start with pull but not with key, just clicked. Tapping starter didn't work but after first couple times trying sounded like starter was trying to work. Tried bypassing solenoid nothing from the starter. Took off all connections from battery to starter and cleaned them well. Put them all back on and now when I turn the key nothing at all. No clicking, nothing. Am I going backwards and breaking more? What do you suppose my issue is?

045 I would make sure the battery is strong first of all. I would think that if you tapped the starter and it turned over then the brushes are stuck or dirty. I would pull the starter off and take it apart and clean it and make sure the brushes work well. I would also inspect the bendix and make sure it works fine. If you had water in the recoil its also in the bendix and probably the starter.

You can bench test the starter by putting a ground on one of the bolt lugs and put the positive on the starter lead. It should spin like crazy.

well i was able to make a little progress. I had a friend come up and load test the battery, it's fine. We also were able to jump the solenoid and beat on the starter (it took more than a tap) which got it working initially but that didn't last long. The bendix's teeth have worn down which has also caused the flywheel teeth to wear a bit as well. I'm assuming that this is from all the water and grime, but wondering if the starter not working optimally or the solenoid not working adequately has caused unnecessary wear also. Regardless i have just order a new solenoid, bendix and starter. Hopefully this will finally cure my headache.

Sounds like you are going in the right direction. Take apart the starter when you have it out and rebuild and clean it so you have a spare. :)

Help

Hi I have a 2007 sportsman 500 deluxe Polais ATV, when I turn on the key there is no lights or any power,I wait for about 5 minutes or so the lights and dash start flickering and then stay on, I try to start it with the key and nothing pull start it and it runs shut it off and it will start with the key after all that leave it for 30 minutes and you go through it again. I have put a new starter, battery, ECM, solenoid, called Poaris Canada and they where very nice to me but told me to take it to a dealer at $90.00 an hour, already had it at the dealer for over 3 hours and this is what is still happening, can anybody help me.
Thanks

Hi I am new here n I'm seriously flustered. I took my 02 sportsman 90 the the shop n sunk 600 dollars in it n when my boys went riding it was raining keep in mind it was not hard riding just an easy ride in an open field, I had the top end done n thought I should run a tank of gas thru it just to break in the rings. I did that, I put it on a jack n let it idle till the gas was gone filled it again n went inside. The next day I started it n they rode about 10 min n it quit n won't start,I checked for spark n nothing. I removed the cdi box n it was cracked n smelled burnt so I replaced it, it still wont start, no spark any ideas

I have another issue with my 2001. Started doing this the other day, kinda leaping forward when put in gear. If the brake is applied it stalls. Same with reverse. I took it for a run to no avail. Any ideas as to what would cause this? New fuel pump last summer and few miles since.

the belt is binding and when you put on the brake it stalls the motor. The belt should run free between the two clutches at idle. I would think that your clutch is not fully disengaging. Take it off and clean it really well.

Add some Sea Foam to the gas. I was told the gas gets crappy after about a week. Doesn't matter in the large vehicles but makes a diff with smaller motors. This from a small motors mechanic. The crappy gas varnishes everything. Mine did the same and the carb cleaner got it running and it was taken for a good run. Now I add a small amount of gas conditioner each time a can is filled. Conditioner is added to the lawn tractor when stored for the winter (full tank). It's run for a few minutes first. Always starts on first try in spring.

I'm back with another gripe. Quad gave me the raspberry when I tried to start it. Put it on the charger which didn't bounce up to 8-12 but held around 2 amps. That was on the regular 10 amp charge. Set it to two amp and left it all day. Needle barely moved off 2 even when set at 10 amps for a couple of min. Stll getting raspberry. Fan was by-passed to a manual switch and it has lots of juice. Lights are bright. I so need a newer machine.
