Come along vs. winch?

Will a 4,000lb come along pull the same as a 3,500lb winch?
Obviously I know that I will be doing work compared to pushing a button, but will that come along pull me out of the mud just the same?

I'm running through all the ways I can think of to
1. Save money &
2. Be able to pull in any direction.

A come along and some tow straps would be easy to pack and they would work even if an atv is dead.

I used to use a come along. Then i got a winch and now i don't have an atv without a winch. I don't like that with come alongs in mud after you pull maybe 3 to 5 feet and have to reposition it and the atv goes back to the original stuck position. Winches are worth every penny. Although if you don't get stuck much and don't want to spend the money on a good winch. Then a come along should be fine, although be prepared to work like 5 to 8 time harder and longer to get unstuck.

You can get "decent" cheap winches too.... like the Harbor Freight Badlands 3000 lbs. Winch. Currently priced @ $137, with many good reviews.

You could use a come-along, but it's hard to run a come-along and the throttle at the same time (surprised no buddy touched on that thought yet!!)!! And I think only moving the machine 1-2" at a time while fighting with a come-along may prove to be an exhausting and poor idea, when it's actually time to use it...... Just my opinion.

If you are mudding an atv and too cheap to buy a winch wait till the mudding starts taking its toll!
Agreed 100%!!

I get saving money just like the next guy but to not buy a winch for a quad you plan to get dirty seems just silly to me. :hmmm:
Look at it this way. You paid X thousand of dollars for your machine in which you hope to get a ton of use out of. Some of that use will likely end up getting you stuck. Lets assume it takes you an hour to manually pull yourself out with a come along or 5 min with a winch. That is an hour less of riding time you have.

I am not sure what you do for a living but for me, that free hour is hard to come by and would rather be moving than rowing on a come along.

If you think the winch is a bit expensive wait until you have to replace an axle, or a Sprague cage. The cheapest winch in my books is the one I own but never had to use. Your mileage may vary though. :)

I am thinking of just getting a HF Badlands winch for the 550. I don't mud so winch isn't going to see much use. I have an awesome Warn 3.0ce that I put on my 700 when it was new. The 700 is my workhorse quad I use to pull stuff out with like small stumps. I don't see myself doing that anytime soon with the 550. So far that Badlands winch has been great on my Jeep. I have the 12k model on Jeep.

a come-along is a safety net for when you break your winch. and since most winches are good enough now that it really is user error that breaks them I'm confident in my statement of "when YOU break your winch."

Now, that said. I have both a winch and I keep a couple of come-alongs around for good measure. It's a good thing I did, because when I broke my winch (hey, look at that, user error) it was stuck in a whole that was continually filling with water and mud so no amount of shovelling was going to help. Just glad grandpa bought good stuff, and I wasn't too far from home. a quick walk home and a short wait for my brother and his girlfriend to get here so that she could watch the kids while the wife went to her plans and him and I got my quad out in about an hour. after the 2 hours I spent trying to get it unstuck and the hour waiting for him to get there. now, Had I had a working winch, it would have taken maybe 15 minutes tops. That was a lot of work, and a lot of wasted time because the winch wasn't working. Now, if you've got the come-along with you on the ride that helps save some time, but it's still and hour and two people vs 15 min and 1 person.

if I were a mudder, winch or come-along, I'ld also carry a couple of snatch blocks (pulleys) and extra line. Each pulley cuts the load by 1/2. Two pulleys and it's down to 1/4 of the original load. Two pulleys and your buddies quad or your winch/comealong would work even in the nastiest hole.

Plus you could even drag ANY fat chick on the planet.:lmao:

Snatch blocks and extra line are cheap. Who doesn't like cheap ?

I've only used my Bad Lands 3000lb winch about 4 times, but it works great and with a 20% off coupon you can get the winch and a no questions asked extended warranty for $120. I've heard not to buy the smaller ones, they aren't water proof and fail quite often.

don't ride in places where you've got no exit plan. Either another quad, or other items to attach too. They make drag anchors, but I've never used one and don't know how well they work, but I'm sure if it's hard ground you're going to have a hell of a time getting it to work well enough to pull out a quad.

What would you hook a come along too then? If its really sparse then you can bring along a steel rod to drive into the ground to provide an anchor point.

So last year I was hunting with my quad at Pink Mountain and I was riding on an road with lot of grass. Suddenly I just sink in to the mud that was cover by grass. The 4X4 did not do much for me so I decide to use the winch that like any other ATV is mounted to the front. Guess what was in the front? Like in 99% of cases it was more mud. I'm sure you don't want to get deeper that you are on so you have to go back. If somebody can show me how I can pull an ATV back when the winch is on the front I will really appreciate it because I'm not an expert on this.
A friend came with a come-along and in less than 10 minutes pull me out from the back. Saying that it was not a chip $40 one from Canadian tire. It was more like a heavy duty one around $1000 so that may have made a differences.
Last week I took my Jeep YJ at Princeton for bear hunting and again driving on a road that was looking pretty good I sink in seconds. And no I'm not blind or dam but when you drive for 2 miles and the road looks the same except you get to a portion were there is water infiltration under the vegetation that cover the road is hard to see. The Jeep did not have any winch but I can assure you that if it had one on the front bumper it will not help at all. You want to get out thru the shortest distance and not get deeper in to the mud.
So again My body took me out with his come-along hook to the back bumper.
I'm thinking now to buy a good one like his and just move it from Jeep to ATV to truck this way I can use it on all vehicle from any direction.

Tiger tail would help.

Rather be riding, instead I'm using Tapatalk

My first reaction is Winch... but the last two times I've needed the winch, my ATV either died, and the battery did shortly after, and the other, there was nothing to winch too. both times the winch failed me. .

Everytime I've used another ATV to pull out.

I think a winch or come along will get anyone out of small stuff, when you just need a nudge, but when your STUCK, I think it's either another atv or tractor

I have a falcon 2500. Paid 130 for it with no complaints. I won't have a wheeler with out a winch

^I wouldn't either. Saved 4 machines last weekend with the winch, we all got stuck in the same spot. Had the wife's 300 and the winch saved our asses
